Director of Corporate Development
What energizes you at work?
It is energizing to help lead an organization committed to advancing global therapeutics and bringing healthcare via clinical research to underserved segments of the population. Both current and future generations will benefit from the work we do today. Headlands has such a transformative vision that allows us to profoundly impact our communities. This vision motivates me every day, and I am proud of the impact we have.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about your position?
There is a tendency for Corporate Development to be seen as only a financial guru or ‘money’ person. In reality, I have extensive experience across the pharmaceutical lifecycle and have the utmost respect and appreciation for those who share a similar passion for impacting the world of clinical trials. When identifying and evaluating strategic growth opportunities for Headlands, I always prioritize whether a consistent ethos and mission is present to enable both parties to thrive under a partnership.
What’s a trip that changed you, and why?
In 2014, I spent a few weeks in Bangladesh studying the garment industry a year after the collapse of Rana Plaza. I have friends from my university days who work as missionaries in schools there, so I have valued my relationship with Bangladesh for quite some time. I was curious to the causes of factory tragedies such as what happened at Rana, what is being done to address them, and whether these reactions are the proper course of action. During this trip I met with a wide range of stakeholders in the garment industry: factory owners, brand representatives, academics, government officials, workers’ rights representatives, and entrepreneurs. Ultimately, it became clear that safer conditions for garment workers will depend on a more transparent supply chain with all parties accountable.
What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?
I am extremely passionate about working with at-risk youth as a boxing coach. I find amateur boxing to be an incredibly effective tool to combat gang violence that plagues certain neighborhoods, and coaching has allowed me to connect with many people who have taught me so much. There is no greater joy than to play a part in the success of a young man or woman who has overcome incredible obstacles.
What’s the top destination on your must-visit list?
Wherever the next Olympics are! I find the atmosphere of international competition to be captivating, and it is inspiring to watch the best athletes in the world compete at the highest level to achieve their lifelong goals. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 Rio Olympics, and although I am unable to attend the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, I plan to attend the 2024 Paris Summer Games.
