Director of Business Development

Meet Mauro
Q

How do you prefer to start your day?

A

I like to start my day by waking up early, making a pot of coffee, and reading the following, in order:

  • HBR Management Tip of the Day
  • Bloomberg’s 5 Things to Know Before You Start Your Day
  • Yahoo Finance Morning Brief
  • Morning Brew
  • Fortune CEO Daily

Around mid-morning, I get my Google Daily Alerts & Fortune Term sheet, which keep me up to date on the VC/PE world.

Q

What’s the biggest misconception people have about your position?

A

That I only email or call when I want something or need something. Business Development = Sales, and nobody likes getting sold stuff, right? But really, the best 30 minute zoom videos are when we talk about our personal lives & interests for the first 25 minutes. Interactions should not transactional! I’m a quintessential Aquarius – I’m emotional and want to connect with people on a personal level. If I can be the one that helps first, instead of asks first, that’s a massive win!

Q

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

A

I have a few “best compliments,” though they were all questions. The best compliment to-date has been “will you officiate our wedding?” What an honor! Closely following that were team members/direct reports from my prior companies asking me to write recommendation letters or serve as a professional reference for their next career move. Incredibly humbling!

Q

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

A

Other than in the month of February, you will likely find me playing golf on the weekend while listening to a book on Audible. In February, you will likely find me on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans watching a parade.

Q

What’s your most used emoji?

A

I have 2 that I use together: the poop emoji and the shrug emoji. I feel like we all deal with many not-so-ideal situations that can be adequately captured by the poop emoji, but we have the resilience to shrug it off and adopt what Coach K calls the “next play mentality…” - shrug it off and move on.
